Parts of gold-woven ribbons, presumably of Byzantine origin, underwent gentle conservation including removing moisture, straightening, cleaning, stabilizing, and strengthening loose gold threads. The use of optical microscopy and XRF analysis allowed for a detailed study of the manufacturing technology of the fabric ribbons and the chemical composition of the gold threads (gold, silver, and copper). Given their location in the burial, it can be assumed that one of the fragments could be identified as a gold-woven collar ribbon, while the other is likely a ribbon from a burial shroud. These findings indicate the use of imported, expensive textiles in Kursk region during the pre-Mongol period, which may indicate the direction of international trade contacts.

DOI: 10.7868/S3034577426020104

Nikolay S.
